Denise Curran

Denise has been working with homeowners, contractors, and vendors for over twenty years, bringing functionality and beauty into their spaces.  Spending most of her career in the interior design world, she has extensive experience with floor planning and color scheming, including furnishings, flooring, wall color, lighting, and artwork. Searching for change, she moved into kitchen and bath design in 2020.  With her considerable background in project management, Denise enjoys the challenge of focusing on the details of each individual job that make it unique to its customer. Her ability to guide clients from design, budget expectations, and material selections to the final product and installation is a gift.

Kevin Hancock

Executive Chairman

Kevin Hancock

Kevin Hancock is the Executive Chairman of his seventh-generation family business, Hancock Lumber, as well as an award-winning author, nationally recognized keynote speaker, and executive coach. Over the last decade, Kevin has written books, spoken locally and nationally, developed and co-hosted executive coaching programs, and created content that fuels his website, The Business of Shared Leadership. The mission of his personal website is to heighten RESPECT FOR ALL VOICES. “If everyone on Earth felt trusted, respected, valued, and heard, what might change?” Kevin believes that everything might change—and, most importantly, that the workplace can and must become a catalyst for this transformation.

Kevin is also an award-winning author and speaker. His first published book, “Not For Sale: Finding Center in the Land of Crazy Horse,” won three national book awards. In 2020, Post Hill Press published his second book, “The Seventh Power: One CEO’s Journey into the Business of Shared Leadership.” Released in 2021, Kevin’s third book, “48 Whispers from Pine Ridge and the Northern Plains,” is a hybrid book of sorts——part photography and part thoughts for reflection, heightened self-awareness, and human advancement.

Kevin has worked at the company since 1991 and is part of the seventh generation of his family to help lead the organization. A family-owned integrated forest products company since 1848, Hancock Lumber is passionate about its people-first and values driven culture. Over the course of his career, Kevin has received the Ed Muskie ‘Access to Justice’ award, the Habitat for Humanity ‘Spirit of Humanity’ award, the Boy Scouts of America ‘Distinguished Citizen’ award, and Timber Processing Magazine’s ‘Person of the Year’ award. He is also a past chairman of the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association. Kevin’s work has been featured in both The New York Times and Inc. Magazine.

Kevin is a frequent visitor to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and an advocate of strengthening the voices of all individuals through listening, empowering, and shared leadership.

Kevin is a graduate of Lake Region High School and Bowdoin College.  He lives in Maine with his wife, Alison.  Together they have two adult children, Abby and Sydney.

“An organization’s true value is not defined by revenue growth or profitability. Those are important metrics for our business, but they are outcomes of a higher purpose. The real mission is to enhance the lives of the people who work here.”

Brian Neilson

For 28 years, Brian Nielsen has been in the hardware and building industry – 10 of which has been spent designing kitchens. Brian went to PRVTC (now Portland Arts) upon graduating high school and continued his education in a variety of ways, including professional photography. Brian says, “I love a challenge and the opportunity to explore all the details to produce a unique design.  My background in photography gives me a solid understanding of how light and shadows interact with cabinets, countertops, walls, and floors.  My problem-solving skills allows me to approach situations and puzzle out solutions that may otherwise be overlooked.” Brian has approached his decade-long kitchen design career with a problem-solving eye and a go-getter mentality. Outside of work, Brian is a licensed foster parent and has adopted two wonderful children, Emily and Michael. In his spare time he is a scout leader and proudly holds the title of “Popcorn Kernel,” representing three units and, most recently, BSA Pine Tree Council.

“I started on the floor and within a couple years I worked up to the moulder where I got certified as a Pro Moulder Operator. Now I train other people. I came in and work hard and it has continued to work out by just putting the effort forward.“

“Before Hancock Lumber, I worked my whole professional life as a chef. I was an executive sous chef at Sunday River, but after my son was born it became too demanding to have a family life in that industry. I was looking for something with more flexibility and Hancock Lumber offered that to me. I started working here not knowing a thing about sawmills and they’ve worked with my every step of the way. I believe almost anyone can find something they are good at in a sawmill, planer mill, or retail. The culture is extremely professional yet laid back, and it’s a big shift in dynamic (that I hadn’t experienced before) where your family life can come first.”

“At Hancock Lumber, we look for opportunities in people every day. We want people to move into positions where they feel valued. Years ago somebody saw value and potential in me and it’s now my turn to give that to others. That is the culture we have around here – everybody leads; our people express their opinions and showcase what they have to offer. That kind of a culture opens doors for everybody.”

“As a kitchen designer you wear many hats—and, my favorite one to wear is that of the artist. I see every kitchen as a grand usable work of art that is displayed in the heart of the home and showcases each homeowners’ unique style, while also functioning to meet all their needs.”
