In the Community: Hancock Lumber awarded with Camp Sunshine giving milestone

Camp Sunshine Honors Hancock Lumber. Today, Hancock Lumber Company celebrated a significant giving milestone with Camp Sunshine, a community partner they’re closely connected to. Camp Sunshine recognized Hancock for their milestone of giving, reaching over $250,000 in gifts since the organizations first became connected over 27 years ago. At a ceremony Friday morning, surrounded by the current session of campers, families, and volunteers, Kevin Hancock accepted the award from a longtime friend, coaching partner and Camp Sunshine Director, Michael Katz.

Since 1991, Hancock Lumber has been connected to this amazing organization, set in  Casco, Maine where our company was established over 170 years ago. Both David and Carol Hancock served on the board of directors, and were instrumental in helping bring life to Camp Sunshine. Kevin Hancock spoke to the group commenting, “I remember when this camp was just an idea. Now, because of all the campers and volunteers it is reaching people on a global level. It is amazing what an idea can turn into, and we at Hancock Lumber are so proud to be connected to you.”

For the past decade, Hancock Lumber has been a proud sponsor of Camp Sunshine’s annual Pumpkin Festival fundraiser . A Maine tradition since 2003,the Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival transforms the streets of Freeport and L.L. Bean’s Campus into a sea of orange. Hancock Lumber has been a long-time sponsor of this great event, helping transport pumpkins and sponsor a campus-wide event full of 10,000 lit jack-o-lanterns.

Founded in 1984, Camp Sunshine provides retreats combining respite, recreation and support, while enabling hope and promoting joy, for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families through the various stages of a child’s illness.

Camp Sunshine’s program is offered year-round and has the distinction of having been designed to serve the entire family in a retreat model. The program is free of charge to families and includes on-site medical and psychosocial support. Bereavement sessions are also offered for families who have experienced the death of a child from a supported illness.

Camp Sunshine inspires hope in families affected by life-threatening childhood illness through their unique, supportive program at the beautiful campus on Maine’s Sebago Lake.
