Celebrating 40-years: Congratulations to Scott Libby!

On this day in 1982 Scott Libby started his first day of work at Hancock Lumber. Today we are celebrating 40-years of Scott Libby being on Team Hancock! Wow!! During a celebration event at the Windham store, General Manager Ray Collet read remarks from Kevin Hancock on Scotty’s career and dedication to our company. Congratulations, Scotty–your work ethic, pride, and dedication are inspiring!

Scott Libby

Hello to everyone!  I am traveling outside of Maine this week, otherwise I would be with you right now.  Scott Libby is one of my all-time favorite people.  I have great respect for him and his entire family.  The Libby family represents the very best of what America is all about and Scott, of course, has done so much for our company and the Windham store in particular.

Few people know this but my first boss at Hancock Lumber was Scott Libby!  It was about 1983 and I was a junior in high school when my dad sent me down to the Windham yard to work for the summer.  It was there and then that I first met Scott. We worked hard that summer, but what I remember most was that we had fun.  Scott always made it fun.  I remember at the end of work days throwing a football back and forth across the yard!  Although I knew almost nothing about the business at the time, Scott was always patient and taught me how to do things the right way.

Really, when I see him now, I still feel like he’s my boss because he is always telling me what I should and shouldn’t be doing as CEO of the company!  Ha!  But, honestly, every time Scott has something to tell me I listen and he’s pretty much always on to something important that should be fixed, changed or improved.  I love how Scott always speaks his mind!

Scott has always been ahead of his time. He was the first in our entire industry that I know of to envision a covered lumber yard. Scott wanted, way back when, to put a giant bubble over the Windham yard!  An idea ahead of its time.

Then, a few years ago, I came into my office in Casco one day to see a toy helicopter suspended over my desk by thread and string.  This was Scott’s message to me that we should be forward thinking and start delivering certain products by drone.  Before Amazon or Elon Musk ever thought of drone delivery – Scott Libby was on it – way ahead of them he was!

In short, Scott Libby is an amazing person – one of a kind!  Full of commitment to do things the right way; full of innovation to always make things better; full of stories and tales to make you think, laugh, and enjoy the day; full of energy, whether rain or shine!

There is no way I can thank Scott enough for what he brings to Hancock Lumber – but, suffice it to say – Scott is someone I deeply respect, trust, value, appreciate, and enjoy!  Hancock Lumber would not be the same with out you, Scott. Be well and be proud today, my friend!  I’m thankful for you and please keep bossing me around and telling me what I should be thinking about next.

Sincerely,

Kevin signature
