The Associated Builders and Contractors hosted its Maine Craft Championships this April in Augusta. The Maine chapter of the ABC organization aims to represent merit shop construction and construction-related firms through support, education and legislation. Attendees of this year’s event included 1,278 attendees (students and instructors), four legislators and the Maine DOL Commissioner, Laura Fortmen. Hancock Lumber was a proud sponsor and contributor of event competition materials, including 2×4’s and oriented strand boards for electrical competition and for floor protection. In addition, Team Hancock had a booth at the event, hosted by Retail HR Manager John Muzzy.
Students who visited the Hancock Lumber booth learned about career opportunities with Team Hancock, as well as tried their hand at manually grading pine boards! Those boards included four, two foot pieces of Hancock Pine: Select, Finish, Premium and Standard. Students were given 15 seconds to put them in order starting with the highest grade piece based on NELMA’s qualifiers.
“The ABC Craft Championship was a terrific opportunity to connect with the next generation of the construction industry. At the Hancock Lumber table we had a lumber grading “game” which was a great way to talk about the education one receives as an employee at Hancock Lumber, whether it’s in our retail or sawmill division. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the ways these students would like to put their skills to work. All the construction industries are so dependent on each other, so it was wonderful to see all the industries well represented by the students. The future looks bright!” – John Muzzy, Retail Human Resources Manager
