Hancock Lumber Receives Miles Freeman Award of Service

A Hancock Lumber truck is parked in front of the Saco build.Late last year, Habitat for Humanity York County recognized Hancock Lumber as the first-ever business to receive the Miles Freeman Award of Service. Named for Habitat for Humanity York County’s founder, the award honors a business that embodies Freeman’s passion and commitment to serving York County families through safe and affordable housing. While on-site this March at the Saco Habitat house build, Executive Director, Amy Nucci, presented the award to Steve Rickert, Hancock’s General Manager of both their Saco and Kennebunk locations.

Last July, Hancock Lumber pledged to donate 100% of the building materials for the new home being built in Saco. Then, in January 2021 Habitat announced the partner family they selected for the home. Finally, in early March, construction began on the house . If you’re interested in volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, you can register online. Bringing life to Habitat houses is a true community affair and one we’re thrilled to be a part of.

Amy Nucci, Executive Director of HFHYC, shared her excitement, “Without Hancock Lumber’s generous gift, it might not have been possible to break ground on a new home in Saco. We’ve worked so hard with the City of Saco to acquire this land and are very excited to be building in this city. Hancock’s commitment to donate all of the building materials for this home represents their authentic commitment to community—we are so appreciative of their support.”

Habitat for Humanity York County Celebrates its 35th Anniversary

The 2020 Miles Freeman Award of Service.

This year, Habitat for Humanity York County celebrates its 35th anniversary, founded by the award’s namesake, Miles Freeman. With his incredible passion for service and helping others, Miles stood apart from others. In honor of his commitment to the organization, the York County branch created the Miles Freeman Award for Service and selected Hancock Lumber as its inaugural recipient. Today, we proudly display the award–a custom-made Walnut bowl–in our Saco Kitchen Design Showroom, located just a few miles from the new home site.

Our relationship with Habitat for Humanity has been long-lasting. In 2005, we teamed up the Greater Portland Habitat chapter to participate in “Operation Home Delivery” to send panelized home components to people who lost their houses during hurricanes Katrina and Rita. After keynoting the 2018 Raise the Roof Gala, Kevin Hancock was honored to receive the Spirit of Humanity award in recognition of his outstanding commitment and leadership in furthering the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland. In 2020, we contributed to Habitat for Humanity in conjunction with the Brunswick Rotary Club on an event that raised over $10,000 to help bring affordable workforce housing to the local area. Our team is proud of our on-going partnership with Habitat for Humanity and the great work they do to help families and communities build or improve a place they can call home.
