Hancock Lumber was thrilled to be a lead sponsor—along side Wright-Ryan and Boston Capital—to help bring sustainable, healthy living and urban agriculture to Portland, in a first-of-its kind project. This type of innovation and forward—thinking will help propel Maine’s economy and create a model for others to follow with its rooftop garden, four-season greenhouse, community kitchen, and continuing education for residents.
Hancock’s own Marketing and Communications Director, Erin Plummer, attended the event and commented, “Our business is about creating lasting partnerships with our customers and this project is a great example of how like-minded businesses who share a similar corporate responsibility, vision, and alignment can help make things happen and create momentum in our communities.” The focus of the 409 Cumberland project is both healthy living and energy efficiency. John Ryan of Wright-Ryan Construction spoke at the event as said,“Somebody said to me, ‘Every building in downtown Portland should have one of these,’ and I completely agree. To get a housing project approved with a rooftop garden takes tenacity.… And supporting a garden five stories up is something of a challenge for designers and builders.”
It is great to know Hancock Lumber’s sponsorship will help support the first three years of operation of the rooftop garden, the community kitchen and the training + resources needed to educate 409 Cumberland’s residents and other community members.
