Kevin Hancock Discusses Best Place to Work Honor!

Hello!

BPTW_Maine_2014_logoHancock Lumber was recently selected as a ‘Best Place to Work in Maine’. This is an extremely difficult award to achieve. There are over 40,000 companies in Maine. Seventy were selected as a ‘Best Place to Work’. There are over 500 lumber and forest products companies in Maine. Only one in this category received this recognition.

The award is valuable because it is entirely based on confidential employee survey results collected and evaluated by an independent third party. Each year all 435 people on the Hancock Lumber team take this important survey. We use the information to get honest and safe feedback about what it is like to work at Hancock Lumber. The goal of the survey is to make the voice of the employees strong and to know where we need to focus from their perspective.

Employees answer a series of questions. Here are a few examples:

  • “I can trust what this organization tells me.”
  • “A spirit of cooperation exists within the company.”
  • “I feel I am valued in this organization.”
  • “I would recommend employment at this company to a friend.”

In each case employees agree, disagree or give a neutral response to each question. In our case, on average, employees responded positively to a question 85% of the time (while only responding negatively 6% of the time). 98% of our team participated in the survey this year!

Here are a few examples of survey responses:

  • 93% said they were “proud to work for this organization”.
  • 95% said they would “recommend our products and services to a friend”.
  • 96% said they were “willing to give extra effort to help the company succeed”.

We are really proud of this award for our company and industry and I wanted to share the news with you. Hancock Lumber’s strategy is to differentiate through great employees who have the responsibility and resources they need to take best-in-class care of you and your company. Being a ‘Best Place to Work’ does not mean it is a perfect place to work. Each year we use the survey as a tool to understand where the employees feel we need to focus our energy to improve. We are constantly trying to get better in this way and we hope you notice the results of our efforts. Thank you for choosing Hancock Lumber! We are proud to be connected to you and your company!

Sincerely,
Kevin Signature
