5-years best placesHancock Lumber Named Best Places to Work in Maine, 5-years in a Row

For 5-years running, Hancock Lumber has been named a Best Places to Work in Maine. Hancock Lumber’s mission is to create a work environment that first and foremost recognizes employees as human beings and ultimately improves the lives of anyone who works at the organization. Culture makes the difference at Hancock Lumber and each employee on the 540-person team works intentionally every day on truly being a best place to work.

Kevin Hancock, a sixth-generation family member and current President commented on the accolade, “To be recognized as a Best Places to Work in Maine for the fifth year is super exciting.  To perform TOGETHER at this level for half a decade demonstrates our team’s commitment to creating a great work environment for each employee. It takes EVERYONE to create a best place to work—each person is the biggest contributor to his or her own work experience and to the work experience of those who stand or sit beside them. This award is earned by EVERYONE; you can’t delegate the creation of a best place to work.”

The awards program was created in 2006 and is a project of the Society for Human Resource Management – Maine State Council (MESHRM) and Best Companies Group. This statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Maine, benefiting the state’s economy, its workforce and businesses. The 2018 Best Places to Work in Maine list is made up of 75 companies in three size categories: small (15-49 U.S. employees), medium (50-249 U.S. employees) and large (250+ U.S. employees).

Human Resources Director and 30+ year Hancock veteran, Wendy Scribner shared this note with employees,“I feel very proud of Hancock’s dedication to this mission of being a Best Place to Work in Maine, and send a big thank you to our employees who come in every day and work hard to foster a respectful and meaningful work environment. We should all feel really proud of this accolade!”

Hancock promotes a team environment where every employee feels empowered, respected, trusted, listened to, and valued as a person. Leadership is encouraged at every position in the company. The culture is employee driven, built on viewing employees as people and having the management patience to involve the entire team in the company’s leadership processes. Creating and sustaining a best place to work environment takes focus, discipline and a commitment from everyone on the team—the goal is to have a culture that enriches the lives of people that work at Hancock, fosters a high level of engagement, and one that guides good minute-to-minute decision-making by all employees.
