Hancock Helps Local Nonprofit, Healthy Homeworks

Healthy Homeworks LogoHancock Helps Local Nonprofit, Healthy Homeworks!

Recently, Hancock Lumber connected with Healthy Homeworks, a nonprofit organization based out of Lewiston, dedicated to helping landlords and tenants work together as shared stewards of the aging housing stock, building practical skills, healthy homes, and collaborative relationships. Their signature Earn-a-Bed program caught our attention when we met with their team to learn more about their organization. Hancock instantly clicked with the Smith family and their mission, so we decided to jump right in with a commitment to donate enough Hancock pine for 15 beds.

Founder Amy Smith commented on Hancock’s support, “Thanks so much for the gorgeous lumber! Scott and Mo helped us hand-select on Saturday, and then Bobby and Scott delivered the order yesterday. They even took a tour of the operation.  We were so impressed with the quality of the lumber that we won’t need to hand-select in the future – almost every board was perfect – a real testament to your team’s focus on exceptional customer satisfaction. There wasn’t quite enough lumber in stock so Mo is ordering the balance for delivery this coming Monday. We can’t wait to start prepping it for our volunteers!”

Flagship Earn-a-Bed Program

Healthy Homework’s flagship Earn-a-Bed program gives participants in need the opportunity to volunteer for a few days in the bed factory where they build a brand new bed for themselves.  They  learn basic woodworking and hand tool skills in a collaborative, community-oriented environment–and, in addition to the bed earned through volunteer work, they’ve also produced surplus beds, which Healthy Homeworks sells to cover the program’s costs. Volunteers not only earn a brand new bed for their home, they keep the program running, paying the opportunity forward to their neighbors and friends. Once complete, Healthy Homeworks delivers and sets up the new bed, complete with a new mattress and bedbug encasement, where it stands as a daily testament to their creative potential and ability to improve their own life.

The nonprofit hasn’t caught just Hancock Lumber’s attention, either.  WCSH6 recently aired a segment promoting their Earn-a-Bed program and the 30-bed delivery they made to Avesta’s new apartment building at 72 Bishop Street. Take a peek at the video here.
