Countertop Choices and Helpful Info

Are you searching for the right countertop selection for your next kitchen or bath project? Take a look below at some of the commonly desired choices and the pros and cons of each type–from granite and engineered stone to solid surface, wood tops and laminate, explore the right choice for your and your home.

GRANITE
Nature’s Beautiful Stone

There is nothing quite like the durability and beauty of natural stone countertops.  Granite is one of the most popular surface choices on the market to compliment kitchen and bathroom cabinetry.  Naturally occurring, elegant and timeless, no two pieces of stone are alike.  Granite is available in two finishes – polished, the most popular and honed and leather. Costs for granite depend on many variables, including color, finish and origin of the stone. Professional installation is included in the pricing. Other natural stone materials, like marble, slate and soapstone are softer than granite, requiring more delicate use and greater care. All stone counter tops must be sealed periodically – care and cleaning instructions are provided with each granite counter top installation.

ENGINEERED STONE
Uniform Coloring

Often compared to natural stone choices, engineered stone is popular due to its greater consistency, durability (harder than granite), and availability in bright, modern colors.  Plus, these countertops are easier to maintain, requiring no sealing. Most often made of quartz mixed into resin, this surface type is often recognized by brand names such as Cambria, Zodiaq, & Silestone. These products tend to be colored much more uniformly than granite and the product is frequently confused for granite. However, engineered stone won’t save any money over granite: the two materials cost roughly the same. Like Granite, these products also include professional installation in their pricing.

SOLID SURFACE
Scratch + Stain Resistant’

Most commonly known by the brand name Corian, solid surface countertops are appealing because of their versatility in aesthetics and for their non-porous characteristic.  Available in a vast range of trendsetting patterns and tones, as well as custom-designed colors, these tops are seamless, stain resistant and scratches can be buffed out. The sink can even be molded into the countertop for a seamless installation. Costs can vary depending on color, layout, sink + back splash options. Professional installation is also included in the pricing of this surface.

WOOD COUNTERTOPS
Variety of Wood Species

Like butcher blocks, wood countertops are offered in a variety of wood species and can instantly warm up a kitchen. Butcher blocks must be oiled monthly to seal the surface, but are easy to clean with proper maintenance.  High quality wood countertops come with a waterproof finish. Compared to other choices, these are a high maintenance option but certainly add beauty, character and warmth to any space.

LAMINATE
Huge Color Selection

The most affordable countertop material on the market, laminate comes in thousands of colors and designs. With high definition printing and textures, many of today’s laminates simulate granite so well they can fool even trained eyes. Like wood, laminate pricing can include installation or can be installed by a contractor or a crafty do-it-yourself homeowner.
