Hancock Lumber Attends Lake Region Agricultural Fair | For the first time ever, Lake Region High School and Vocational Center produced an agricultural fair, bringing in 75 local businesses. Over 1,000 area students attended the fair which included a gym full of business booths and interactive exhibits on the front lawn. Lake Region High School, Middle School, Vocational Center, Alternative School, and several elementary schools sent hundreds of students to the fair–additionally, Sacopee Valley, Molly Ockett Middle School, Poland Regional High School, Portland Arts and Technology High School, Region 9 School of Applied Technology, and Oxford Hills’ Forestry Program had students attend the event.
Jeff Hall explains how to scale a log to Songo Lock’s fifth graders
Representing Hancock Lumber’s sawmill division, Jeff Hall explained to students what a board foot was, taught how to do the calculations, and demonstrated how to scale logs to determine how many board feet could be sawn out of each log. Everyone left our booth knowing a board foot is 144 sq. inches and that there really is a lot of math involved in lumber!
Hancock’s Marketing + Communications Director, Erin Plummer, commented on the event, “I am so excited to see Lake Region bring this type of event to Maine students. It is so important for kids to learn first-hand about the businesses that drive Maine’s economy and potential employers and career paths that fit their skills and interests. In addition to Hancock Lumber, over 75 area businesses attended the event including Maine Warden Service, Q-Team Tree Service, Professional Logging Contractors of Maine, William Day Jr. Logging , HP Hood, Wolfe’s Neck Farm, UMO Department of Food/Agriculture and Cooperative Extension, Pineland Farm, Lake Environmental Association and many more.
