Best Place to Work Celebration! Thanks to over 350 Hancock Lumber employees and family members that joined us for a beautiful night of baseball at the Portland Sea Dogs on June 9th. It was great getting to know each other outside of work and to celebrate our 4th year in a row as a Best Place to Work in Maine (BPTW) and our employee engagement journey. As we prepare for the launch of the 2018 BPTW survey, our HR Director, Wendy Scribner, wrote an inspirational note to our team that we wanted to share titled, “What Being a ‘Best Place to Work’ Means to Me”.
“What being a ‘Best Place to Work’ truly means to me is I am fortunate enough to work with high caliber people each and every day. Respectful and caring people who come to work to add value, embrace our company priorities, and work with friends—it’s a real team who enjoys our core businesses and the work they do!
There are so many exciting things happening at Hancock Lumber in 2018, but for me the excitement at this time of year is that we are about to launch our Best Place To Work in Maine employee engagement survey! It has been such an unbelievable journey since we started this process 8 years ago. I am very thankful that we embarked on this journey and we are 100% committed for the long haul! We should all feel very proud – the competition for this accolade is tough.
I feel very proud today when I reflect on Team Hancock – what a fantastic group of people we have at our company. There is so much longevity here with amazing people, and the new hires we bring on-board are equally as fantastic, bringing so much positivity, enthusiasm and a desire to grow with us. I get calls weekly from external applicants asking what there are for opportunities to work at Hancock – they have heard it’s a great place to work. That makes me so proud and is a direct reflection on all of you, Team Hancock, so please be proud!
We started our first survey in 2010 and from there developed a strong process that includes everyone in focus groups and huddles year-round. Years ago, the first focus groups were very much about people – peers and managers. We dug in over the years and now it makes me smile that much of the focus group and huddle conversations are about operations and efficiencies. We now share and participate in how we can improve operationally and with increased efficiencies. Additionally, your feedback about training, benefits, recognition and inclusion have brought significant, positive changes to our company.
A part of our mission at Hancock Lumber is for everyone feel appreciated by managers AND by their peers! We encourage one another to take the time to say thank you when someone steps up or lends a helping hand. Our environments are most definitely challenging at times and it is frequently one another that we must rely on for support and good cheer daily.
Thank you all for being respectful teammates and for your solid contribution to our work environment. We want people to land at Hancock and build a career here, so we aim to recruit the very best we can. We all lead very busy lives between family, friends and other interests; when we arrive at work it takes focus to jump wholeheartedly into it, contribute to the team equally, and be positive influences.
