Raymond Elementary School Visits Casco Sawmill

Hi! My name is Sophie and I am working as a marketing intern at Hancock this summer. I had the chance to follow some students around on a sawmill tour (a first for the students and me, too!) The fifth grade class of Raymond Elementary School visited our Casco Sawmill location. The 52 students were thinking ahead about possible occupations as they scoped out the different buildings and Hancock Pine manufacturing. One of the main focuses of the tour, the teacher noted, was to get the students to think about local industries and their offerings. The students had spent the morning learning at Sabre Yachts, another local manufacturing industry.

Last summer, as a capstone project, I looked into Hancock Lumber, comparing their social responsibilities to a much larger global corporation. While learning about Hancock as a small, local company, I found that the connections to both neighboring companies and individuals reflected an immense sense of community. I experienced this same feeling of community while on tour with the engaged local students.

A parent of two twins on the tour commented that her children were raving about their experience. She remarked, “They thought the whole experience was ‘so cool’! James said, ‘I got to put five boards into a machine and watch wood come out the other side. It was awesome.’ Brady said, ‘I might want to work there when I get older. It seemed like a nice place to work.’”

Hancock prides itself on community outreach and hopes to continue to teach students about their business. If you’re interested in a Hancock Lumber sawmill tour, please fill out their online form.

Proudly doing business since 1848, Hancock has always been immersed in each community we serve. Deeply embedded in Hancock’s culture is stewardship, and we firmly believe in giving back and leaving things in better shape than when we assumed responsibility for them. Our employees and customers raise families in these communities; our employees and customers coach and serve on boards here. We connect with organizations around the state, supporting them financially and with in-kind materials, along with the gift of time and service.
